How the Kit Builder works

Choose four things — trip length (1–3 days), season, shelter type (tarp, tent or natural shelter) and how plentiful water sources are — and the planner instantly builds a packing list for you. Every item is sorted into a category, and the list adapts to your choices: winter adds warmer layers and insulation, a tarp brings a ridgeline and pegs, scarce water means carrying more capacity. Optional items are marked, so you can decide what is worth the extra weight. Tick items off as you pack, print the list or share it with a link.

How weights are estimated

Each item carries a typical weight for a mid-range, widely available product rather than the lightest ultralight option. Food is multiplied by the number of days (with more calories in winter), and carried water depends on your water sources: 1 litre when you can refill often, 3 litres when water is scarce. The planner also suggests a pack volume based on trip length, season and shelter. Treat all figures as a realistic guide: your own gear may be lighter or heavier.

Base weight vs. consumables

Base weight is everything you carry that does not get used up: shelter, sleep system, tools, the clothing on the list and first aid — the backpack itself is not included. Consumables are food and carried water, which get lighter as the trip goes on. Base weight is the number to work on when you want a lighter pack; optional items are not counted in it.

Tips for a better kit

  • Cut weight from the big three first: shelter, sleep system and backpack.
  • Never cut safety items: first aid kit, headlamp, fire starter and water treatment.
  • Pack for the coldest night you might face, not the average one.
  • Test new gear on a short trip close to home before relying on it.
